We spoke to the man behind the initiative, James Taylor, who is A&R Director for The Guitar Label - home to such talents as Martin Taylor and Albert Lee, no less.
"Fundamentally, it's a talent search," he says. "We've teamed up with the International Guitar Festival to winkle out the guitar heroes of tomorrow. The IGF already has a platform for unsigned artists at their various festivals, but working with iTalkGuitar.com essentially widens the net."
So what do people have to do to become part of Tomorrow People?
"First of all, they sign up to the iTalkGuitar.com website and create themselves a profile, which they can do in a matter of minutes. Then they can upload some samples of their playing in either MP3 or video formats, fill in the online form at http://www.p3music.com/iTalk/ and then wait to see what happens."
Is the project open to everyone?
"Yes, we're looking for guitarists in every style and so it doesn't matter if you're into really extreme metal or gentle fingerstyle, we still want to hear from you."
Is it just for guitarists living in the UK?
"No, it's open to everyone. All potential performers have to ensure is that they can get to the festivals to play there, as we're not in a position where we can cover costs."
So what happens after they sign up?
"We take a look or a listen and draw up a shortlist of people we would like to see perform live. Those artists will then be invited to play at one of the IGF's festivals in front of an audience - it could be in Bath, Newcastle or London."
What happens if the guitarist concerned is part of a group? Can he bring the band along?
"No, I would advise guys in that situation to make some backing tracks. In order to make the whole thing run smoothly at the festival, we can only really deal with soloists - so if you're in a group you'll need a backing track."
Labouring the point slightly, this means that you could be a singer-songwriter, blues instrumentalist or country plucker and still have an even chance of appearing?
"Absolutely. We're not discriminating against any style of music, type of player or even age... It really is open to everyone."
Do people have to send in their own compositions or can it be other artist's songs?
"Literally anything. If you want to play 'Stairway To Heaven' or 'Bohemian Rhapsody' you're really quite welcome!"
Speaking for the International Guitar Festival, general manager Phil Castang told us, "The IGF is really thrilled to be working alongside iTalkGuitar.com in nurturing new talent and giving the players of tomorrow the opportunity to make that first big step into the music business." So there you are, people. If you've been sitting there wondering how on earth you can find your way into the crazy old music industry, this just might be the portal you've been looking for!
